Zack Sabre Jr. was among the biggest names out of the independent professional wrestling scene to be chosen for WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic tournament.
A regular for prestigious indie promotions like PROGRESS, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and Revolution Pro Wrestling, Sabre Jr. has built a large fan-following.
The CWC has not just been WWE’s way of putting on something new and fresh for fans, but also a way for WWE to scout talent and sign guys to the promotion.
Sabre Jr. was pegged as one of the guys most likely to be signed by WWE at some point for the NXT brand, and while he says he could certainly picture himself there one day, he still has more work to do outside of WWE.
“I think it’s definitely appealing,” Sabre Jr. told ESPN. “What NXT has become, I could definitely see myself in that environment. I would benefit from it. But I do have a personal journey as a professional wrestler that I want to travel.
“There are a lot of things I want to achieve. There are still some bits and pieces that I’ve got on coming up. I’m very happy doing what I’m doing now. I have other aspirations, so we’ll just see what happens.”
He got to achieve one of those goals recently, wrestling Kurt Angle under the RevPro banner.
“It was an incredible experience. Kurt was a childhood hero of mine. I told my mum when the match was announced and she said, ‘Oh, you used to have a poster of him on your wall.’ When you think about his period in WWE, and the high level he became so quickly, it’s insane. As a fan of him first and foremost, I think it would be nice to see him finish out his career there definitely.”
Sabre Jr. currently stands as the RevPro British Heavyweight Champion and the PWG World Champion.
