The WWE is returning to the Alamodome, bringing with it one of the biggest events of the calendar year.
Royal Rumble 2017, set to take place Jan. 29. 2017, marks the first time the world’s premier wrestling company will host its annual 30-man battle royal in the famed San Antonio, Texas stadium since 1997. The news was announced Friday evening.
The event’s winner will be guaranteed a shot for the WWE World Championship or WWE Universal Championship, with the specific title depending on what brand they affiliate with.
While the event’s prize is typically in the form of a title shot at WrestleMania, last year’s event had 30 men compete in the over-the-rope battle royal for a chance to become the WWE World Champion — an honor bestowed upon Triple H, who eliminated Dean Ambrose to reign victorious.
Royal Rumble is often recognized as the official start to The Road to WrestleMania, which takes place for the 33rd time in 2017. WrestleMania 33 will be hosted at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
Several months out, it’s impossible to say who exactly will take part in the popular annual event, but fans can rest easy knowing some of the biggest names in the company — including Seth Rollins, John Cena and Roman Reigns — will be featured so long as they are healthy and not holding one of the top titles at the time.
A stadium with a 72,000-person capacity, approximately 60,000 people were in attendance for the 1997 Royal Rumble that saw Stone Cold Steve Austin take home the big win. Austin, one of the more popular Superstars and a WWE Hall of Famer, would go on to win the Royal Rumble match again in 1998 and 2001.
Tickets for the Royal Rumble go on sale Friday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. ET.
