Five-time WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James will return to the WWE to face NXT Women’s Champion Asuka on Nov. 19 at the NXT:TakeOver Toronto. WWE announced James’ return Thursday night on their Twitter account.
James parted ways with WWE in 2010 and has not returned since. Since leaving WWE, she has continued her career and is a three-time TNA Knockouts Champion. In addition, she has recorded two country music albums since her departure from the organization.
Her matchup against Asuka figures to be met with a high level of intrigue. Asuka defeated her last NXT challenger in less than one minute and has repeatedly reassured fans that no one can beat her.
James is one of the most decorated women in WWE history. Meanwhile, NXT has struggled to find a suitable challenger for Asuka, as evidenced by her one-minute title defense. If they were going to bring an outsider as a challenger, it makes sense to make it one of the best women’s wrestlers of recent memory. The match will likely get one of the top spots on the match card.
NXT suffered a loss of talent with the WWE brand-split draft and the organization has had to call inexperienced wrestlers in to challenge Asuka. James, as one of the best women wrestlers of the millennium, should serve as a suitable challenge until the current young talent is ready for the test.
