Enzo and Cass have been one of WWE’s hottest acts since being called up in April. The duo has consistently received some of the loudest reactions of any Superstar regardless of what city they’re in.
Enzo has been a savant on the microphone. The self-proclaimed “Smack Talker Skywalker” seems to be on a different level than anyone else in the company right now. His catchphrases have been repeated verbatim and he manages to add new material each week.
Big Cass provides the muscle and in-ring experience, but let’s not discredit his promos. Cass holds his own on the microphone – albeit may be overlooked by comparison to his teammate – and has the ideal size WWE has been known to look for.
So far, the duo has been booked favorably on the main roster. Seriously, you have to be doing something right when you’re wrestling alongside John Cena in a pay-per-view match three months into your main roster run.
But SummerSlam will be crucial for the future of the “Realest Guys in the Room.” This is Enzo and Cass’ first major pay-per-view on the main roster. Also, it’s in Brooklyn, which given that their characters/real life personas are basically “dudes from New York and New Jersey,” they should be expected to receive the loudest ovation of the night.
Fortunately, Enzo and Cass are set in the perfect scenario at SummerSlam facing Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens.
The two Canadian Superstars formed an alliance two weeks ago on Raw. Owens told Jericho he’d have his back in an upcoming match against Enzo and Cass.
The duo hasn’t had much time together, but has been entertaining in the past two weeks. Jericho and Owens have sort of a mentor-apprentice vibe going on. They both play masterful heels – arguably two of the best in WWE right now – and have the same sarcastic tone in their promos. Owens’ in-ring trash talking is something Jericho’s mastered for decades.
They’re the perfect random pairing of two heel singles competitors to set up an angle with a rising babyface team. But given how excellent Jericho and Owens are at talking, they’re specifically great for Enzo and Cass.
In turn, Enzo and Cass are the perfect SummerSlam opponents for JeriKO.
Let’s be honest, smark crowds cheer for awesome heel characters. Jericho has been doing his best work in years, which is saying something considering he’s a future Hall of Famer. Owens has gotten huge pops in every smarky city WWE has visited since his debut.
Who are the only people that can prevent the crowd from hijacking the match? Enzo and Cass.
Let’s disregard the fact that the duo is so over that they can get a huge pop out of the notoriously dull Corpus Christi crowd. SummerSlam is in Brooklyn and the two guys from opposite sides of the Hudson River are going to be the crowd favorites unless they’re facing Derek Jeter and Notorious B.I.G.’s hologram.
But the feud shouldn’t end at SummerSlam. JeriKO is too good of a pairing to end after one pay-per-view. Even if Jericho just becomes Owens’ mentor, it’s still money. Plus, there is so much potential in a long-term angle with Enzo, Jericho and Owens splitting promos.
Whether WWE wants to prolong this angle or just give all four Superstars something to do for SummerSlam, this booking has worked out in its favor. Enzo and Cass will face credible opponents who are capable of keeping up on the mic. Jericho and Owens will help the less experienced tag team look outstanding in the ring.
Everyone wins from having this matchup at SummerSlam, especially the fans.
